Coco Chanel was the revolutionary female that changed everything about women’s clothing. In the early 1920s, she designed the classic “Chanel suit,” which was based on traditionally masculine apparel. This was the first suit designed for women, and it and opened the door for women to add male silhouettes to their wardrobe – and wear them in the workplace. The staggering myriad of styles, fabrics and prices gave women unprecedented options when it came to overcoats.

If you’ve watched shows set in the 1920s like Boardwalk Empire, you see that many men wear these collar pins and collar clips. Men still would wear them with ties, though, so the collar clip became really popular. It held the collar tips down, elevated the tie knot slightly, and, overall, it was just a fashionable look.  Here's What The Ideal Beauty Standards For Men And Women In The 1920s Looked Like The Flapper is the look most commonly associated with the roaring twenties. Flappers wore short, tube-like dresses that could be plain or adorned with beads, fringe, or geometric shapes in an art-deco style. Flappers also accessorized with long necklaces, usually pearls, as well as scarves and headscarves, and galoshes. The Flapper look was intended to be an over-exaggerated, attention-grabbing look. Young women were experiencing more freedom in the post-war 1920s, and sought to shake the rigid expectations for women in past decades.

Men likewise abandoned overly formal clothes and began to wear sport clothes for the first time. Because women dressed for their leisurely activity, they also found interest in dressing for the nightlife during the Jazz Age. Formally known as “Flappers“, these women would dress to dance the night away with their stylish and relaxed-fit dresses.

In the 1920s, an undergarment called a “step-in” was widely popular. With a very similar look to the slip dress, these garments were often made out of silk or cotton and had a clasp that made them into a romper.
